Human Resources Director

The Human Resources Director reports to the Executive Director and is a key member of the Legal Aid of Western Missouri leadership team.  This position works closely with the Executive Director on many aspects of Legal Aid’s administration, coordination and evaluation of the human resources functions including, but not limited to, recruitment and hiring, benefits administration, compensation planning and payroll administration, employee relations, compliance, and employee development for all Legal Aid offices.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and update Human Resources policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with all HR-related laws and regulations, including but not limited to HIPAA, FMLA, FLSA, ERISA, Workers Comp, federal, state and local employment laws.
  • Maintain HRIS/Payroll system using Paycor and administrator bi-weekly and semi-monthly payroll.
  • Timely complete audits for workers compensation policy, annual EEO-1 reports, quarterly BLS payroll statistics report, monthly Kansas City JOLTS reports, and others as assigned.
  • With the Executive Director and designees, develop appropriate compensation and benefit packages through the use of industry-specific standards and studies.
  • Primary oversight of benefits programs and open enrollment, including communication with benefit brokers/providers and employees.
  • Oversee recruitment of diverse staff, including developing strategies for identifying, hiring and retaining high quality, diverse employees.  This includes coordination and development of our internship and Early Hire programs in collaboration with career services or similar offices at local universities.
  • Draft and post job postings, perform background checks and employment verifications and set up personnel and HIPAA files for all new staff.
  • Oversee and improve the employee orientation and evaluation process.
  • Train, advise, and support managers and supervisors regarding employee development, conflict resolution, progressive discipline, and compliance with HR-related policies, procedures, and laws.
  • Conduct confidential internal investigations of HR issues, as needed.
  • Secure and negotiate bids and maintain coverages for professional liability, property, and all related insurance for the LAWMO Board and staff.
  • Promote a positive culture through leadership by example, support of LAWMO’s mission, a team-orientated approach and clear communication.
  • Serve on the Executive Leadership Committee, 401(k) Oversight Committee, DEIB Committee, the Personnel Committee, and other committees as assigned.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.
 
Qualifications:
  • Four-year degree in relevant field and a minimum of five years’ experience in the field or in a related area, or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of commonly-used concepts; practices; and procedures within human resources and personnel management;
  • Knowledge and experience in information privacy laws, access, release of information, and release control technologies, familiarity with human resources information systems and software;
  • Demonstrated organizational facilitation, communication, and presentation skills;
  • Ability to prioritize workflow and organize diverse material and ability to handle multiple, competing and changing priorities; ability to perform effectively without supervisor and within established time limits and ongoing deadlines;
  • Ability to interact effectively and professionally, and provide exceptional service, both internally and externally at all times;
  • A great sense of humor.
