Database Architect Manager
Description
The Database Architect Manager plays a critical leadership role in shaping and managing the Community Foundation’s data ecosystem. This position is responsible for designing and maintaining the data architecture that powers real-time operations, analytics, and the online giving portal. The role combines strategic oversight with hands-on technical execution, ensuring that data systems are secure, scalable, and aligned with organizational goals. This role offers a significant opportunity for technical ownership and influence, guiding architectural choices and driving the adoption of modern data tooling. The individual in this position will collaborate closely with employees across the Community Foundation to deliver high-impact data solutions and process improvements, ensuring that data capabilities keep pace with the evolving needs of the platform and its donors.
This full-time position is located in Kansas City, MO, manages the data engineering team and reports to the Vice President of Information Technology. This salaried, exempt role may work remotely, up to 40% of the time, after a successful training period in the office.
Key Responsibilities
- Team Leadership & Collaboration: Lead and mentor a team of data professionals to promote best practices in data architecture, engineering, and analytics across the organization. Work closely with the technology team and stakeholders across the organization to understand data needs and deliver effective solutions.
- Data Architecture & Integration: Design and manage scalable data warehouse solutions using extract, transform, and load (ETL) processes and dimensional modeling. Integrate data from multiple systems (e.g., Microsoft SQL Server, Salesforce, SharePoint) using tools like SSIS to ensure seamless data flow. Build and maintain data pipelines for structured and unstructured sources, including APIs, JSON, logs, and relational/non-relational databases.
- Analytics & Reporting: Develop optimized data models for Power BI to support reporting and visualization. Monitor and enhance the performance of SQL Server Reporting Services and Power BI infrastructure. Provide support for SQL Server-based financial system.
- Platform & Tooling: Utilize modern data platforms such as Azure, and other equivalent technologies. Apply expertise in MSSQL, SSIS, SSRS, Git, Python, Postgres, Linux scripting, and JavaScript frameworks. Use distributed version control systems and tools for change management and deployment.
- Governance, Security & Optimization: Implement data governance policies to ensure data accuracy, consistency, and security. Optimize system performance by refining data processes and queries. Ensure smooth and secure implementation of data-related changes with minimal risk to operations.
- Quality Assurance & Documentation: Conduct design and code reviews to ensure alignment with business needs and technical standards. Maintain clear documentation for all supported database environments and processes.
Requirements
- Education & Experience: Master’s degree or equivalent with at least 10 years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills with the ability to build professional relationships; ability to make effective speeches and presentations on complex topics to varying stakeholders.
- Technical Expertise & Competencies: Demonstrates a high level of technical aptitude with the ability to quickly and thoroughly learn new software systems. Skilled in interpreting complex technical instructions and navigating both abstract and concrete variables. Adept at defining problems, collecting and analyzing data, establishing facts, and drawing valid, actionable conclusions.
- Microsoft Certified Professional (Implementing Datawarehouse using SQL Server).
- Ability to write complex code, stored procedures, SQL agent jobs, and other database objects to meet application requirements efficiently.
- Experience with MS SQL Server, SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), Power BI, JSON, and XML.
- Preferred experience with Visual Studio, SQL Server Development Studio (SSDT), Git and SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS).
- Collaboration & Problem Solving: Proven ability to foster a highly collaborative environment while operating independently with strong self-motivation. Skilled in streamlining operational processes through effective communication and teamwork. Responds thoughtfully to sensitive inquiries and complaints and demonstrates composure and agility under pressure—quickly identifying and resolving issues with sound judgment.
Physical Requirements
- Office & Computer Work: Ability to work regularly at a computer terminal in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
- Noise & Communication: Able to work in an office with moderate noise levels. Ability to communicate and interpret detailed information effectively.
