Neighborhood Legal Support of Kansas City (“NLS”) is a non-profit law firm dedicated to empowering neighborhoods, reducing blight, and promoting affordable housing in Kansas City’s urban core. We have a seven-year history of working closely with neighborhoods and numerous community partners to abate blight, create affordable housing, and revitalize neighborhoods. See the attached summary of our work.
Position Overview
NLS is seeking a detail-oriented, mission-driven Paralegal to join our growing team. The Paralegal will support NLS’s attorneys in litigation, real estate, title, and community revitalization matters, with a particular focus on abandoned property, nuisance abatement, quiet title, and related property law work.
This position is ideal for someone who is highly organized, enjoys building systems, and wants to use their legal skills in service of neighborhood-led revitalization. The Paralegal will work closely with attorneys, neighborhood organizations, public agencies, courts, title companies, and other community partners.
This role includes some local travel, as well as occasional evening or weekend commitments for neighborhood meetings, community forums, or other NLS-related events.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist attorneys with property-related civil litigation matters, including Abandoned Housing Act, nuisance abatement, quiet title, and other real estate-related cases.
- Prepare, format, file, and organize pleadings, motions, notices, discovery, correspondence, exhibits, and other legal documents.
- Maintain litigation calendars, case deadlines, hearing dates, service deadlines, and internal tracking systems.
- Coordinate service of process, publication, title searches, court filings, certified mailings, and related procedural requirements.
- Assist with property, ownership, tax, title, recorder of deeds, and court record research.
- Communicate with courts, process servers, title companies, neighborhood representatives, public agencies, and other external partners.
- Maintain organized physical and electronic case files, including pleadings, correspondence, title materials, photographs, inspection records, and property documents.
- Support the development and refinement of internal legal systems, including templates, workflows, checklists, case tracking tools, and document management practices.
- Attend and assist with neighborhood meetings, community forums, and partner meetings as needed.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the General Counsel or other supervising attorneys.
- Paralegal certificate, associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree, or equivalent relevant legal experience.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple matters, deadlines, and priorities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to produce accurate, polished work product.
- Ability to work effectively with attorneys, staff, community partners, neighborhood leaders, public agencies, and residents.
- Demonstrated commitment to community development, housing justice, neighborhood revitalization, public interest work, or similar mission-driven work.
- Comfort with legal research, public records research, court filings, and document management.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Adobe, and general case/document management tools.
- Prior paralegal experience in civil litigation, real estate, title, housing, land use, municipal, or public interest law.
- Experience with Missouri court filings, e-filing systems, docketing, and litigation deadlines.
- Experience with quiet title, nuisance, abandoned property, foreclosure, tax sale, or other property-related legal matters.
- Familiarity with recorder of deeds records, county property records, tax records, GIS systems, and title documents.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.
- Prior work with nonprofit organizations, community-based organizations, neighborhood groups, or residents in disinvested neighborhoods.
- Experience helping create or improve legal templates, workflows, tracking systems, or case management processes.
