Cataloging Supervisor

Description

Under the immediate supervision of the Discovery Services Manager, this position works in Discovery Services and requires the desire and ability to enjoy a dynamic work environment; knowledge and application of cataloging and library metadata theories and practices; use of diverse resources and technology; oversight of and communication with cataloging and processing vendors; independent decision making and actions; and participation in department activities as a colleague and team member. This position supervises the Cataloging Library Collections Associates, which includes assigning work, setting expectations and goals, ensuring that benchmarks are met, and providing training. 

 

This is a full-time exempt position with a starting salary of $53,910, with excellent benefits. Position is open until filled. 

 

Schedule

Monday - Friday: 8:30 am - 5 pm.

 

Location

Central Library: 14 W 10th Street, KCMO, 64105. 

 

Job Duties (Essential Functions)

  1.  Manage and perform day-to-day cataloging operations.
  2. Supervise the Cataloging Library Collections Associates.
  3. Act as team leader or project manager for special projects as assigned.
  4. Know, develop, and document cataloging and processing specifications for outsourcing and internal application.
  5. Participate in metadata management for both the ILS and OPAC, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
  6. Help develop local cataloging practices within national and professional standards and practices.
  7. Serve the department and library as the main cataloging contact for information and issues resolution.
  8. Maintain appropriate vendor relationships and communicate with them effectively.
  9. Train department and library staff in cataloging related areas as appropriate.
  10. Identify, analyze, and report relevant data.
  11. Prepare reports and presentations associated with department activities and responsibilities.
  12. Perform directed or independent research for Library Collections initiatives.
  13. Understand the Library Collections vision and contribute to messaging through promotion and education.
  14. Demonstrate knowledge of relevant librarianship trends and participate in professional development.
  15. Participate in library meetings, workgroups, and committees as appropriate.
  16. Cultivate and maintain professional relationships inter and intra departmentally.
  17. Collaborate and communicate with others, exhibiting respect, honesty, and a willingness to serve.
Requirements
  1. Communicate effectively in written and spoken form.
  2. Possess a strong understanding of MARC, DDC, and RDA cataloging standards.
  3. Demonstrate working knowledge of serials cataloging.
  4. Display working knowledge of metadata.
  5. Show moderate to advanced knowledge of ILS and intermediate computer skills; be willing to expand knowledge.
  6. Possess strong attention to detail.
  7. Exhibit good decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  8. Able to move book trucks up to 100 lbs.
  9. Able to perform repetitive tasks.
  10. Able to lift 20 lbs.
  11. Able to grasp, twist, bend, lift, and stretch, to handle objects and materials at various heights.
  12. Able to perform job requirements in busy, noisy environments and tight spaces.

Required Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience supervising staff and their performance.
  • Three years’ cataloging experience or other relevant experience such as data management, database records management, digital media curation, or related areas required. Performing duties in a professional position preferred.
  • These requirements may also be met by an equivalent combination of education, work experience, and life experience.
