Director of Communications

The Regnier Family Wonderscope Children's Museum of Kansas City is a non-profit children's museum dedicated to providing STEAM educational experiences for young children and their families. Our mission is to spark a lifelong love of learning through the universal and uniting power of play. Our museum features 30,000 square feet of indoor exploration and 1/2 acre of year-round outdoor adventure, all with a unique Kansas City theme. Wonderscope seeks a Director of Communications as part of its senior team. 

Reports to:                              Executive Director
General Responsibilities:        Lead all Communications activities for the organization.
Duties will include, but are not limited to:

  1.  Develop and implement a comprehensive communications plan to promote the organization's mission and programs and expand its outreach and recognition.
  2. Develop diverse materials that highlight Wonderscope's focus on learning through play.
  3. Serve as liaison to the Board Communications Committee.
  4. Work with the Communications Committee Chair and Executive Director to prepare the agenda and monthly report for the committee.
  5. Lead the communications team in developing digital content to engage a diverse audience for the museum, ensuring that digital content is regularly maintained and updated.
  6. Promote and share the agency's name and work on all social media platforms, while maintaining the organization's creative aesthetic.
  7. Support fundraising efforts through effective messaging and brand awareness.
  8. Monitor and maintain the organization's website, including its contact information and effectiveness.
  9. Promote the agency's work to local, regional, and national media outlets and develop strong relationships.
  10. Lead the creation of the organization's annual report and all other print promotional materials.
  11. Enhance the organization's visibility to funders through targeted outreach and effective communication, and serve as a representative of the organization when necessary for networking, speaking engagements, and other purposes.
  12. Identify outreach levers, i.e., events, media, and partners, and actively participate in our broader community.
  13. Cultivate relationships within the media community and collaborate with the Board to leverage these relationships to establish second-tier media contacts.
  14. Serve as a key member of the management team at Wonderscope.
 Skills Required:
  1.  Bachelor's degree or at least 5 years of experience in communications.
  2. Positive and dynamic personality with a passion for children and education.
  3. Exceptional interpersonal, leadership, and organizational skills.
  4. Strong communication skills.
  5. Strong knowledge of the local and regional philanthropic community and local media.
  6. Willingness to step in and do everything required for the organization's success. 
Compensation: $50,000-$60,000 salary, dependent on experience and ability. Benefits include health, dental, flexible PTO, and a 401 (k) plan.
