Operations Manager

Camp Fire Heartland provides programs for young people including Afterschool, In-School, Camp/Club, and Summer Day Camp. In Camp Fire, children and youth find a safe, fun, and inclusive environment– a place where they form lasting relationships, develop a sense of belonging and make positive contributions to their community. Camp Fire youth have life-enhancing experiences and develop assets essential to their futures.

Before and Afterschool Programs:

Camp Fire Heartland provides afterschool programming at six local schools for students aged 5-15 (K through 8th grade) in both Kansas and Missouri. This position must be familiar with Missouri and Kansas Childcare state licensing requirements.

Summer Day Camp:

At summer day camp, young people learn to turn off their screens and are active in nature. The camps include social-emotional lessons while children cultivate an appreciation for the outdoors. Camps are offered for seven weeks and hosted in Wyandotte, Kansas and South Leawood, Kansas.

Direct Reports:

This person will oversee operations for teams at multiple sites and will need to have extensive supervisory experience. The manager should have experience supporting teams with a willingness to jump in and help.

External Relations:

Camp Fire Heartland values its partnerships with other Kansas City organizations and working well with other nonprofit leaders is essential. This position will be expected to maintain a high amount of communication with current partners and cultivate new partnerships. In addition, regular communication with team members, children, and their families.

Other Responsibilities include but are not exhaustive:

  • Update or create company policies and procedures.
  • Support the organization in the consistent application of the time and attendance policy.
  • Manage several grants including a large federal grant. Ensure that grant program requirements, outcomes, and data being measured through pre and posts surveys in alignment with grant requirements.
  • Ensure the team has the curriculum, supplies, and equipment required to provide a high-quality program.
  • Communicate with partners (schools, organizations) about the program.
  • Manage staff attendance to ensure ratio.
  • Step in the lead a site when needed
  • Oversee other operational duties.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Preferred Masters’s degree from an accredited college or university preferably in early education or Youth/Family Development.
  • Strong management and decision-making skills including the ability to influence, engage, motivate, and lead others to new levels of effectiveness and programmatic impact. At least 5 years of experience managing staff.
  • Demonstrated experience working with children and families, preferably K-12th grades. Experience in lesson planning and coordination of enrichment programming.
  • Demonstrated ability to be an analytic and decisive decision maker as well as the ability to prioritize and communicate to key staff the objectives and tactics necessary to achieve organizational goals.
  • Strong understanding and experience in program evaluation, metrics, and tactics.
  • Exceptional written, oral, and presentation skills with the ability to effectively interface with all levels of management both internally and externally.
  • Ensure programs adhere to the Youth Program Quality Assessments standards.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity.
  • Technology-efficient; Experienced with social media and Microsoft suite applications and/or able to learn new technologies quickly.
  • Must submit to and successfully pass a criminal background check and possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Able to maintain discretion and a high level of confidentiality when handling sensitive information.
  • Be able to work a minimum of 8 hours a day between the hours of 6:30 am to 6:00 pm and remain on call during those hours.
