Deputy Director (Succession Track to Executive Director)

Organization:  Migrant Farmworker Assistance Fund
Location: Kansas City, MO (with frequent regional travel)
Reports to: Executive Director

Position Summary

The Migrant Farmworker Assistance Fund (MFAF) is entering a purposeful season of leadership transition. Our long-serving Executive Director has announced her retirement effective December 31, 2026. To ensure a seamless hand-off of our mission and operations, the Board is seeking a Deputy Director (Succession Track).

The individual will serve as the "Director Designate" for the remainder of the year, working alongside the current Executive Director and the Board to master the organization's specialized advocacy, financial systems, and community relationships. Upon a successful transition period and the incumbent's retirement, the Deputy Director is expected to assume the role of Executive Director on January 1, 2027.

Core Responsibilities (The Transition Year)
1. Executive Shadowing & Institutional Knowledge

  • Work closely with the current ED to document 40 years of historical donor relationships, grant cycles, and community partnerships.
  • Build trust and rapport with long-term partners, including foundations, legal referral networks, and regional orchards. 
2. Operations & Financial Stewardship
  • Assume immediate responsibility for "the engine" of the organization: payroll processing, bookkeeping, and financial reporting.
  • Lead the preparation and submission of all grant applications and compliance reports to ensure uninterrupted funding.
  • Manage daily office operations and modernize digital infrastructure (website, donor database, and internal files).
3. Programmic Advocacy & Site Leadership
  • Travel regularly (60+ miles) to program sites to monitor service delivery and maintain a presence in the farmworker community.
4. Strategic Succession Planning
  • Attend all Board of Director meetings to build alignment with the Board's vision for 2027 and beyond.
  • Identify and implement operational efficiencies to prepare the organization for a new era of leadership.

Qualifications
  • Bilingualism: Fluency in Spanish and English (written and spoken) is strictly required. 
  • Experience: At least 3-5 years of organziational leadership experience, ideally with a small non-profit environment.
  • Subject Matter Experience: Familiarity with U.S. immigration law, DACA, or farmworker rights is highly preferred.
  • Operational Skills: Demonstrated experience in grant writing, basic financial management, and office operations.
  • Technical Proficiency: Comfortable with website management (e.g. WordPress/Wix), social media, and financial software.
  • Mobility: Must possess a valid driver's license and a reliable vehicle, with the willingness to drive 60+ miles regularly for site visits.
