Program Director
Cancer Action is seeking to hire a compassionate professional to be Program Director. Cancer Action is a local nonprofit providing practical and financial services and emotional support to cancer patients and their families living in the Kansas City metro area. The Program Director helps anchor the programs and services offered by Cancer Action and achieve the mission of reducing distress and improving the well-being to cancer patients and their families throughout their personal cancer journey.
Position Description: The Program Director is responsible for the overall management and necessary administrative and supervisory support for the day-to-day operations of the agency’s programs including patient services, community education, and volunteer programs. The Program Director will be responsible for implementing and developing programmatic and administrative policies and procedures to ensure that Cancer Action is fulfilling its mission of reducing distress and improving the well-being for those with cancer in Kansas City. The Program Director in coordination with the executive director serves as a primary liaison between Cancer Action and other organizations within the healthcare continuum and the community. The Program Director position also performs case management responsibilities to assist with client care and office coverage. The Program Director reports to the Executive Director.
Specific Duties:
- Responsible for developing and implementing programmatic and administrative policies and procedures to attain program goals and objectives. Includes quality assurance of programs, documentation of outcomes of program services, tracking of grant dollars and utilization, and assisting in reporting to the board of directors, grant funders, and supporters. Participation in assessment, strategic planning, and implementation of future programs and services to ensure Cancer Action remains a strong, vital and relevant organization serving cancer patients in the greater Kansas City community.
- Directly supervises the staff that provide program services, including training, completing evaluations, providing direction and support in day-to-day work, and make recommendations for personnel actions to the Executive Director.
- Provide case management services to clients as needed to ensure adequate case management coverage for offices. The Program Director will provide case management as a regular part of their daily responsibilities on a scheduled basis.
- Responsible for community outreach to other providers within the healthcare continuum (hospital nurses, social workers, physicians, administrators, home health agencies, hospices, social service agencies, etc.) to increase awareness of Cancer Action services within the community, form collaborative relationships in programming and helping coordinate care of cancer patients across the community.
- Responsible for the organization of medical equipment, supplies and nutrition. Oversees the organization of in-kind donations received of medical equipment, supplies and nutrition. The program director is responsible for ordering medical equipment, nutrition, gas cards and other items needed for client services.
- Write articles, newsletters, press releases and other written communication to assist in sharing Cancer Action’s message to various constituents within the community. Assist with layout and design of agencies public relations material.
- Responsible for assisting in recruitment and training of volunteers in areas of expertise as opportunities permit. Coordinate the volunteer program and offer training, assistance and direction to the volunteers. Responsible for all volunteer tracking of hours, reporting, coordination with service chairs, mailings, etc.
- Assist with event planning and other fundraising opportunities as requested by the Executive Director. Also assist with other administrative functions within the office to ensure office operations are completed in a timely manner.
- Responsible for implementing community education programs and events regarding prevention, early detection, and cancer related topics as needed.
- Performs additional related duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
- Ability to provide leadership and direction, conducive to leading professional staff and dedicated volunteers to ensure Cancer Action’s programs and services are meeting the mission and goals set by the organization’s board of directors.
- Skills in supervising, evaluating, and providing corrective action to staff in accordance with agency guidelines.
- Knowledge of community resources, health care, and issues impacting those with cancer. Knowledge of disease process, emotional impact of illness, and coping skills. Capability of fostering collaborative relationships with other organizations to strengthen the overall support of cancer patients within the Kansas City area.
- Excellent organizational skills and administrative abilities. This includes computer expertise in Microsoft office products including excel, word, publisher, access. Ability to set up formulas in Excel, complete mail merges, design and complete reports, organize data, utilize online ordering systems.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to provide compassionate, professional care to agency clients.
- Knowledge of and ability to adhere to professional code of ethics.
- Master’s degree in social work or health related field or bachelor’s degree with extensive experience working in a health care related setting preferred, bilingual is a plus. Prefer experience in working with diverse populations.
- Three years of supervisory experience, nonprofit program leadership or any combination of training and experience which is comparable.
- Knowledge and experience in working with community resources and health care environment. Strong administrative skills and computer literacy a must for the position.
- Ability to work both independently and as a part of a team.
- Ability to communicate well and represent the mission of Cancer Action to clients, volunteers, and the community.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold professional ethical standards, agency policies and procedures in maintaining a respectful work environment.
- Able to drive and have a reliable vehicle.
- Ability to perform physical activity related to position including moderate lifting of equipment and supplies, bending and carrying weight to/from vehicle, storage room, etc.

Salary Range: $50,000 - 74,999
