Volunteer and Communications Manager

HopeBUILDERS Home Repair is seeking a dedicated and organized individual for a full-time position focused on volunteer engagement and communications management. This role reports to the Executive Director and is essential in advancing our mission to provide critical home repairs and accessibility modifications for older adults and individuals with disabilities in the greater Kansas City area.

The Volunteer and Communications Manager is responsible for two key areas: managing all aspects of our volunteer program and overseeing external communications and outreach efforts.

Key Responsibilities:

VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT AND ENGAGEMENT (60%)

  • Develop and implement volunteer recruitment strategies, including identifying needs, creating marketing materials, and utilizing outreach channels (social media, email, community partnerships).

  • Manage the volunteer experience from onboarding to project participation.

  • Maintain volunteer records, including availability, skills, hours, and impact tracking.

  • Serve as the main point of contact for all volunteers and volunteer groups.

  • Be present for ramp builds twice a month (typically Saturdays), including:

    • On-site volunteer support and coordination

    • Collaborating with project leads

    • Managing check-in, waivers, name tags

    • Confirming van drivers and arranging lunch

  • Oversee the volunteer email and manage postings on volunteer platforms (Volunteer Match, United Way, AARP, etc.)

  • Organize and lead volunteer appreciation efforts and events.

  • Continuously improve volunteer systems and processes.

COMMUNICATIONS (40%)

  • Manage all external communications, including newsletters, social media, and website updates.

  • Gather and share compelling client and volunteer stories.

  • Create engaging written and visual content (e.g., Canva graphics, storytelling posts).

  • Build relationships with local media and pitch relevant stories.

  • Manage printed and digital marketing collateral.

  • Collect and report communication and engagement metrics.

  • Support the development of corporate/group sponsorships through volunteer engagement.

  • Represent HopeBUILDERS at community events and speaking engagements to raise awareness.

Requirements:

  • 3–5 years of experience working with or managing volunteers. 

  • Reliable vehicle and valid driver’s license for regional travel (Kansas City metro area)

  • Ability to work outdoors and on active construction sites (including around wood dust and in various weather conditions)

  • Ability to work on select Saturdays (flex time during the week is available to offset weekend work)

Qualifications:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Highly organized and self-motivated, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

  • Proficient in analyzing and reporting data

  • Experience with website platforms, email marketing tools, graphic design (Canva, InDesign), and CRM/donor databases

  • Responsive and professional in all communication

  • Excellent attention to detail and deadlines

  • Comfortable working with a wide range of people and building relationships

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team

  • Commitment to the mission and values of HopeBUILDERS Home Repair

This is a remote position with regular travel across the greater Kansas City area for volunteer events, training, outreach, and mission-related activities. The role requires attendance at twice-monthly Saturday ramp builds and weekly in-person staff meetings in Overland Park, as well as participation in strategic planning sessions, board meetings, and committee meetings.

Application Process:

The salary range for this full-time position is $60,000 - $65,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications. HopeBUILDERS does not currently offer healthcare benefits.
