Director, Corporate and Foundation Relations

NATURE OF WORK:

The Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR) will lead and oversee corporate and foundation fundraising initiatives. This role is instrumental in securing philanthropic gifts, cultivating partnerships, and building long-term relationships with corporate and foundation donors to support the programs and objectives of the VFW.  As a key leader within the VFW Foundation, the CFR Director will develop and execute strategies to achieve annual fundraising goals, manage a dedicated team, and collaborate with internal departments and external stakeholders to generate impactful partnerships. This position offers the opportunity to drive meaningful support for the VFW’s mission of serving veterans, service members, and their families. A successful candidate will have a proven track record of securing corporate funding and building mutually beneficial relationships and must be a self-starter with excellent organizational and communication skills, who is excited to roll up their sleeves and engage in every element of our programs.   Oversees all CFR staff.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Fundraising and Partnership Development

  • Develop and implement annual fundraising goals, metrics, and KPIs for corporate and foundation relations. 
  • Secure new and continued corporate and foundation gifts, pledges, and in-kind contributions to support VFW programs and services. 
  • Create high-quality proposals, presentations, and reports to engage donors effectively. 
  • Manage relationships with partners to sustain and grow their contributions. 

Relationship Management

  • Cultivate and steward relationships with corporate and foundation donors, ensuring alignment with the VFW’s mission and objectives. 
  • Acknowledge and recognize donor contributions while ensuring all negotiated terms are fulfilled. 

Strategic Leadership

  • Collaborate with VFW departments (e.g., Communications, Legal, Events, and Programs) to identify funding opportunities and align strategies. 
  • Lead regular planning sessions to expand donor relationships and secure new gifts. 
  • Leverage corporate partnerships to provide added value, such as media exposure or product donations. 

Team and Budget Management: 

  • Reports to the VFW Foundation Executive Director. 
  • Will supervise the Corporate Accounts Manager and the Corporate Relations Manager, setting goals, tracking performance, and ensuring accountability, while overseeing all CFR staff. 
  • Oversee the CFR budget, including revenue and expense projections, and monitor progress to meet financial targets. 
  • Ensure accurate records of activities and compliance with VFW objectives. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business-related fields such as marketing, communications, or management (preferred). In lieu of a bachelor’s degree, 5 or more years of military or civilian experience in a similar position will be considered.
  • Minimum of five years of relevant experience (seven years preferred) with a proven track record of securing corporate and foundation gifts. 
  • Strong interpersonal and networking skills with the ability to cultivate and sustain donor relationships. 
  • Experience with Customer Relations Management (CRM) and fundraising database systems (e.g., Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge) is desirable. 
  • Exceptional organizational, written, and verbal communication skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage teams and prioritize multiple responsibilities effectively. 
  • Knowledge of VFW operations and eligibility for VFW or VFW Auxiliary membership is preferred but not required. 

SCOPE OF POSITION:

  • Reports to VFW Foundation Executive Director.
  • Will supervise the Corporate Accounts Manager and the Corporate Relations Manager.
  • Regular interaction with internal constituents (e.g., VFW Programs, Communications, Membership, Legal, Development and Event staff) as well as external constituents (e.g., current and prospective corporate/foundation donors) to facilitate collaboration and generate revenue to support VFW programs and services.
  • Active involvement in short-term, mid-term, and long-term planning processes related to VFW Foundation goals and objectives.
  • The position is Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) exempt.

WORKING CONDIITONS:

  • Performance based, team-oriented office environment.
  • Daily research/analysis, and communications activity via computer, internet, and telephone.
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods and communicate via computer and telephone.
  • Some limited travel by air, automobile, and mass transit to facilitate corporate visits, events, and presentations. Must have and maintain valid driver’s license.

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Responsible for developing fundraising goals and objectives in support of VFW Programs as related to Corporate and Foundation Relations.
  • Responsible for leading efforts servicing corporate partners to ensure relationships are sustained and expanded.
  • Maintains detailed, accurate, and up-to-date records of corporate contacts and relationships.
  • Ensures that activities are integrated with overall objectives of the VFW so as avoid conflict of goals and objectives.
  • Ensures that relationships with the public, VFW membership, regulatory and charity watchdog agencies, corporations, and other external entities reflect positively on the VFW.

Salary Range: $75,000 - 99,999
