About NLS
Neighborhood Legal Support of Kansas City (“NLS”) is a non-profit law firm dedicated to empowering neighborhoods, reducing blight, and promoting affordable housing in Kansas City’s urban core. We have a seven-year history of working closely with neighborhoods and numerous other community partners to abate blight, create affordable housing and revitalize neighborhoods. See, the attached summary of our work.
Position Overview
NLS is seeking a passionate and mission-driven Contract Attorney to join our growing team. This attorney will lead legal efforts that support neighborhood-led revitalization, with a focus on civil litigation and real estate transactions. The position is ideal for an attorney who is eager to use their legal skills for community impact—especially in the areas of property law, blight remediation, and land-use litigation.
This role includes significant interaction with neighborhood groups, public agencies, and community stakeholders. Local travel, as well as occasional evening and weekend commitments, is expected.
Key Responsibilities
- Litigate property-related civil cases—including Abandoned Housing Act, nuisance abatement, and quiet title actions—from inception through resolution.
- Maintain a full caseload while contributing to a collaborative, inclusive, and impact-focused legal team.
- Attend and participate in neighborhood meetings and community forums to represent NLS and provide legal insight into revitalization strategies.
- Monitor changes in relevant local and state laws; help develop internal training materials and legal best practices.
- Licensed and in good standing to practice law in Missouri (or eligible for reciprocal admission).
- Excellent legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to community development, housing justice, or similar public interest work.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with diverse clients and stakeholders.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities with strong attention to detail.
- Creative and pragmatic problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and legal research platforms.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Experience with Abandoned Housing Act, nuisance, and quiet title litigation.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.
- Prior work with community-based organizations or residents in disinvested neighborhoods.
- Understanding of nonprofit operations or housing development processes.
- This is a contract position and does not include benefits.

Salary Range: $100,000 and over
