The Kansas City Metropolitan Crime Commission (KCMCC) is a public safety nonprofit established in 1949, with a mission of powering a safer Kansas City region. KCMCC is dedicated to uniting people and public safety agencies through advocacy, strategic action, and innovative programs to reduce crime across the Greater Kansas City region. The organization operates several community-facing programs, including Crime Stoppers/TIPS Hotline, Second Chance, the Metropolitan Community Service Program (MCSP), and the Surviving Spouse and Family Endowment Fund (SAFE)
.
Since 2003, SAFE has provided immediate financial assistance to the spouses, children, and dependent parents of law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency services personnel who lose their lives in the line of duty. In order to help relieve the burden, uncertainty and fear that grieving family members face when their loved one has made the ultimate sacrifice, SAFE representatives visit the family within 24-48 hours of a covered death to present a $40,000 benefit. While this gift certainly doesn’t replace the fallen first responder, this benefit provides grieving families with immediate financial relief before benefits from other, often delayed, sources (state/federal) can be obtained.
SAFE serves a fourteen-county region spanning both sides of the Kansas–Missouri state line, and also provides holiday benefits to families, memorial scholarships to first responders' children, and community education on the sacrifices made by public safety families.
SAFE is funded primarily through public support and signature community events - most notably the KC Guns N' Hoses charity boxing event - supplemented by third-party fundraisers, grants, and individual and corporate giving.
KCMCC recently completed a comprehensive 2026–2030 strategic plan, which affirms SAFE as a core program with an established, trusted foundation in the community. There are also opportunities to build on SAFE’s solid foundation: deepening financial sustainability, strengthening operational infrastructure, and elevating SAFE's brand, marketing, and public voice across the region it serves. The incoming SAFE Director will play a central role in advancing these priorities.

Role & Responsibilities
The SAFE Director leads all aspects of the SAFE program on behalf of KCMCC — from the compassionate, hands-on work of supporting grieving first responder families to the fundraising, event management, and community relationship-building that sustains the program's mission. This is a highly visible, relationship-intensive role requiring both operational ownership and public presence.
The SAFE Director reports to the President/CEO of KCMCC and works in close, ongoing collaboration with the SAFE Advisory Board, including regular meeting facilitation, agenda development, and communication between meetings. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Family Liaison & Survivor Support
- Serve as the primary point of contact for families following the line-of-duty death of a covered first responder, coordinating timely, compassionate benefit delivery and connecting families to funeral, legal, and federal benefit resources.
- Maintain ongoing relationships with SAFE families over time including anniversary outreach, event invitations, and holiday benefits while protecting families from unwanted media exposure.
- Success looks like: families consistently describe SAFE's support as prompt, respectful, and personal, regardless of who is delivering it.
- Take primary ownership of SAFE's fundraising strategy and results, including donor cultivation, stewardship, and the judgment calls involved in directing undesignated gifts.
- Build and sustain relationships with individual donors, corporate sponsors, and community and civic organizations that support SAFE through both direct giving and third-party fundraising events.
- Represent SAFE at community and civic engagements to build public awareness and expand the donor and volunteer base.
- Success looks like: a growing, diversified base of recurring donors and community partners, and a fundraising program that depends less on any single relationship or individual.
- Own the overall success of KC Guns N' Hoses, SAFE's signature annual fundraising event, including boxer recruitment and licensure coordination, event-day logistics (security, parking, volunteers, family hospitality, sponsor relations), and post-event financial reconciliation. The Director is expected to ensure the event is well-run and its licensure and regulatory requirements are met, whether personally or through appropriate delegation.
- Plan and execute SAFE's additional signature events, including the SAFE Pickleball Tournament and the SAFE Memorial Scholarship program.
- Coordinate SAFE's participation in third-party fundraising events hosted by community and civic organizations.
- Success looks like: Guns N' Hoses and SAFE's other events meet or exceed fundraising targets, run smoothly on event day, and reflect well on SAFE and KCMCC's public reputation.
- Prepare agendas for and facilitate quarterly SAFE Advisory Board meetings; provide timely updates between meetings, including emerging first-responder community issues and trends.
- Build and maintain relationships with regional law enforcement and fire service leadership, including regular liaison meetings with area police and fire chief associations.
- Success looks like: an engaged, well-informed Advisory Board and strong working relationships across the region's public safety agencies.
- Serve as a public-facing representative of SAFE through speaking engagements, media relationships, and community events to build awareness of SAFE's mission and impact.
- Partner with KCMCC leadership to advance the organization's strategic priority of amplifying its brand and public voice, ensuring SAFE's story is told consistently and compellingly.
- Success looks like: increased public visibility and recognition of SAFE as a program, translating into stronger community and donor engagement.
- Demonstrated maturity, sound judgment, and discretion in handling highly sensitive, emotionally charged situations.
- A demonstrated passion for and commitment to the first responder community is essential.
- Candidates may come from a variety of professional backgrounds including business, nonprofit management, or social services, with a strong preference for demonstrated experience working within or closely adjacent to the first responder community (law enforcement, fire, or EMS). This experience can come from direct service, close family connections or sustained professional/volunteer relationships.
- Experience in fundraising, donor relations, or nonprofit event management as a professional or volunteer would be helpful.
- Experience managing budgets and vendor/contractor relationships.
- Public speaking and media relations experience.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
- Compassionate and emotionally steady - able to support grieving families with warmth and composure, without becoming personally overwhelmed.
- Trustworthy and discreet, with the credibility to build genuine relationships across public safety agencies, donors, the public and the SAFE Advisory Board.
- Comfortable as a public presence including poise in front of a room, a camera, or a grieving family, as the moment requires.
- A collaborative, hands-on operator who is comfortable wearing many hats in a small, close-knit organization.
- High personal integrity and sound independent judgment, particularly in emotionally sensitive or ambiguous situations.
- Reports for work, work assignments, and job-related functions on time and when scheduled.
- Assist with KCMCC fundraising events, as needed.
- Models’ high standard of professionalism to co-workers and partners.
- Remains in compliance with Employee Confidentiality agreement as a trusted member of the KCMCC team.
- Follow policies & guidelines established and set forth in KCMCC Employee Handbook.
