Program Manager- 1Million Cups

1 Million Cups (1MC) is an Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation affiliate program designed to provide a supportive, inclusive space for entrepreneurs and their communities to gather, connect, work through business challenges and explore business opportunities together. Through weekly meetings held in 100+ communities, 1MC fosters entrepreneurship and helps support an economy that works for everyone. 

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Program Manager – 1MC will lead overall program operations, providing leadership support to regional representatives and volunteer community organizers working in 100+ cities across the country. In addition, the program manager will lead process improvement projects, capacity building programs, and national convenings aimed at equipping the  organizers with what they need to successfully run a sustainable and inclusive 1MC in their communities. 

Specific Responsibilities Include:   

  •  Engages and oversees vendors and contractors. 
  • Collaborates with Executive Director, cross functionally and with external partners to ensure that assigned program related deliverables are completed according to specifications, budgets, and timelines. 
  • Manages the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of 1MC community activities. 
  • Acts as a subject matter expert for key stakeholders, including 1MC’s Regional Representatives, Community Organizers, Foundation staff, contractors, vendors, and partners. 
  • Manages the programmatic efforts for 1MC’s training or technical assistance needs and identifies and coordinates applicable training opportunities. 
  • Directs all aspects of planning, organizing, and executing the annual 1MC Organizer Summit, ensuring seamless coordination and delivery of an excellent event. 
  • Maintains open communication and transparency, with manager,  disclosing conditions, operations, and needs of the program. 
  • Administers annual program budget of roughly $1M to ensure maximum effectiveness and outcomes are achieved, as aligned with program parameters.  
  • Supports external and internal recruiting efforts to attract new 1MC communities. Assists with and coordinates activities that support 1MC’s continued expansion. 
  • Engages volunteers and community partners to gather feedback through convenings and outreach, and reports to inform and advocate for continuous improvement. 
  • Ensures effective onboarding and retention of volunteers by implementing new programs, tools, or processes. 
  • Ensures program related metrics are tracked, reported, and assessed in collaboration with the Research, Learning, and Evaluation team. 
  • Collaborates with the Technology and Strategic Communications teams to maintain, enhance, and leverage the 1MC website as an effective tool for communities and partners.  
  • Works closely with the Technology team to manage feature requests and technology improvement backlogs. 
  • Takes proactive steps to minimize delays in delivery of projects. 
  • Regularly communicates with clients to arrange meetings, confirm program schedules, and discuss any program concerns or deliverables. 
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, represents the Foundation internally and externally on program related matters. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE  

Education: Bachelor’s degree preferred but would consider an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates possession of competencies in a related field. 

Work Experience: At least five years of professional experience or demonstrated expertise in a public or private sector, working with entrepreneurs, volunteers, or contractors focusing on economic development, philanthropy, political setting design, or developing, growing, and executing entrepreneurial content and programs. At least four years of progressive recent experience working with influential think tanks, philanthropic influencers or creators is strongly preferred. 

Travel: This position requires occasional regional or national business travel.

  • Has an entrepreneurial mindset, including the ability to think creatively about critical issues both inside and outside the organization, focusing on solving problems and achieving results. 
  • Is highly skilled in facilitating both virtual and in-person convenings, trainings and workshops. 
  • Has excellent communication skills, including well-developed interpersonal, written, customer service and listening skills. 
  • Prioritizes and multi-tasks effectively using excellent organizational skills with keen attention to detail.  
  • Has excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines. 
  • Possesses strong analytical and problem-solving skills. 
  • Has excellent leadership and management skills, including the ability to inspire and motivate others, and manage both internal and external needs and requests. 
  • Has the ability to function well in a high-paced and at times, stressful environment. 
  • Possesses a passion for “doing what is right,” with unquestioned integrity, positive ethics, and values reflective of the Kauffman Foundation.

  • Has strong computer literacy skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation applications and is comfortable with learning new technology tools. Customer relationship software, e.g., Salesforce, user experience, preferred. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. 
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 15 pounds.
