Lighting Technician 
Location: Kansas City, MO 64111
 
JOB PURPOSE: The Lighting Technician ensures optimal lighting throughout the museum campus by maintaining existing systems, installing new infrastructure, and collaborating with the Engineering department and contractors. They manage lighting hardware selection, purchasing, inventory, and installation across the Nelson-Atkins campus, while also performing preventive maintenance and supporting special exhibitions, all in accordance with safety protocols and guidelines.
 
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 
Lighting Maintenance:
  • Apply best practices for maintaining gallery and campus lighting and control systems.
  • Utilize the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to schedule, track, and record maintenance activities.
  • Perform general cleaning of lighting hardware, manage inventory, and organize storage areas.
  • Conduct relamping or fixture replacement, positioning, and aiming of fixtures.
  • Program and provision control systems, and replace ballasts, lamp holders, switches, or other electrical components as needed.

Lighting Quality Assurance:

  • Assist the Manager of Lighting Design in conducting condition assessments of lighting systems.
  • Help maintain lighting design guidelines for museum properties.
  • Collaborate with Curatorial and Conservation teams to achieve desired lighting results while ensuring the safety of displayed artwork.

Featured Exhibitions and Rotations:

  • Support the Manager of Lighting Design in effectively lighting 35-40 exhibitions and rotations annually.
  • Track and manage inventory of lamps, fixtures, and supplies needed for installing and focusing lighting systems.

Personnel & Equipment Safety:

  • Uphold high safety standards when working above and around artwork.
  • Maintain safety standards for all spaces and equipment.
  • Participate in training and adhere to safety policies and protocols.
  • Follow established practices for preventative maintenance.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Complete other duties as assigned or requested to support the Infrastructure and Gallery Construction Division and the institution as a whole.

CORE CAPABILITY REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED required.

Experience:

  • 3+ years of work experience with progressive responsibility in a related field or similar high-quality fast-paced environment.
  • Proven experience troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing electronics and light fixtures.

Technical Skills:

  • Ability to read and interpret architectural and electrical drawings.
  • Skilled in the use of tools and construction techniques, including pneumatic tools, various saws, drills, and hand tools.
  • Basic proficiency with Excel and other MS Office Applications (Word, Outlook), and Adobe Suite.

Physical and Sensory Skills: (with or without accommodation)

  • Keen color perception.
  • Good hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity, and spatial reasoning.
  • Comfortable and able to work at heights up to approximately 40 feet and be able to climb ladders 6-10 ft. Heights of 12 feet and up are generally via a lift.
  • Capable of traveling and operating a motor vehicle, and motorized equipment

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this position, the employee will frequently use hands or fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; climb stairs; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. 
 
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Must also be comfortable working at heights up to approximately 40 feet and be able to climb ladders 6-10 ft. Heights of 12 feet and up are generally via a lift.  Must also be physically capable of traveling and operating a motor vehicle, and motorized equipment.
Working Schedule
Travel Expectations
Monday to Friday 9 AM to 5 PM with occasional work after hours or on weekends when appropriate.
