Position:               Volunteer & Outreach Specialist
Reports to:           Community Engagement Manager
FLSA:                    Non-exempt
Hours:                  Full-time, 40 hours per week
Rate:                     $19.00-$21.50/hr

Time off:              Four PTO days usable at start, two weeks of vacation accrued during first year                                                   increasing to three weeks at year two.
Paid holidays:    
 Holidays include New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth,                              Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and the day after, and the week between                              Christmas and New Year’s
 

Position Summary
The Volunteer & Outreach Specialist supports Cultivate KC’s community engagement and volunteer initiatives by coordinating community-facing events, recruiting and managing volunteers, and strengthening relationships through outreach, education, and engagement opportunities. The position, supervised by the Community Engagement Manager, works closely with internal teams, including the New Roots program, to plan and staff community engagement events, train volunteers, gather and manage volunteer and engagement data in Salesforce, and keep staff informed of ongoing activities. The Specialist also assists with producing outreach content and contributes to the planning and execution of organizational events.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Assist the Community Engagement Manager in researching, planning, and delivering third-party fundraisers, farm happy hours, and low- to mid-level community events.
  • Collaborate with the Community Engagement Manager and the Juniper Gardens Training Farm Program Manager to plan individual and group volunteer farm activities and track volunteer engagement data in Salesforce.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise all community engagement volunteers, including but not limited to New Roots volunteers.
  • Participate in and seek opportunities for community engagement events that elevate volunteerism, alongside efforts to strengthen community partnerships through outreach, education, and learning opportunities, including but not limited to tours, tabling events, and speaking engagements.
  • Collect and prepare community outreach content for the Communications Manager.
  • Assist the Community Engagement Manager in communication and appreciation efforts for event attendees and volunteers.
  • Participate in New Roots bi-weekly meetings, as well as regular Dev/Com team meetings.
Placement Criteria
  • Familiarity with urban agriculture, food justice, or local food systems.
  • 1–2 years of experience in volunteer coordination and supervision, community outreach, nonprofit programming, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Salesforce or other CRM systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to create or support outreach, educational, or promotional content.
  • Experience planning or assisting with community events, tabling, tours, training, or workshops.
  • Ability to engage with diverse communities and cultivate positive relationships with volunteers, partners, and the public.
  • Comfort with public speaking, facilitation, or representing an organization at community engagements.
  • Ability to work independently at events and volunteer activities, including occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to travel locally to off-site events, meetings, farms, and community locations as needed.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software suite.
Physical Demands
This position requires, with or without reasonable accommodation, the ability to walk, stand, reach, stoop, squat, and lift up to 50 pounds, as well as work both indoors and outdoors in cold, hot, or wet conditions. The ability to safely navigate rugged and uneven farm terrain is required.
The position also requires, with or without reasonable accommodation, the ability to sit for extended periods while performing administrative tasks, including data entry and other computer-based work


Work Location 
This position is based out of Cultivate KC’s main office at 4049 Pennsylvania Ave, Suite #206,
KCMO 64111. Some work can be performed remotely; guidance will be provided after hiring.
