About Us

The mission of The Butterfly Literacy Group is to empower girls through literacy.
Our vision is to see girls grow up with a love of literacy and healthy minds.

The project, Girls Empowered to Write Literature (G.E.W.L, sounds like jewel) was started in 2015, by Aisha Brown. She was a teacher and a writer who saw the opportunity to write with girls in her middle school. Her goal was to teach girls ways to bring their creative writing and poetry to life. Girls who were normally quiet in the classroom found a place to be themselves and build a better writing toolbox. The groups have been small so that girls could have more attention than they would normally have in the classroom. Since 2015, Aisha has worked with 60 girls in the after school program.
Now, the program will move outside of the school to the community. We will work with girls in the middle grades (grades 4-8).
