About Us

Avila University, a Catholic, co-educational University founded and inspired by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, provides undergraduate and graduate education in the liberal arts and professional studies, preparing lifelong learners who make meaningful contributions to the global community. Avila University was founded as St. Teresa’s College in 1916 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet as the first private college for women in Kansas City. The College established Kansas City’s first baccalaureate degree program in nursing.

Since its founding in 1916, Avila University has been committed to excellence in teaching and learning that respects the worth, dignity and potential of each human being. Today, Avila provides more than 30 undergraduate degree programs and has eight available master’s options. In 2017, Avila launched the Avila Promise, which provides a 4-year graduation guarantee, guarantees an internship or research experience and provides up to a $1,000 travel grant to students in their junior or senior year.

Avila University desires an education for all, serving a high percentage (43 percent) of low-income and first-generation (31 percent) college students. These students benefit from one-on-one attention, high-quality academics, and interdisciplinary classes. Avila is one of the most diverse higher education institutions in the Midwest— 45 percent of students come from a racial or ethnic minority.
